| INTERDISCIPLINARY
HEALTH CARE TEAM PRACTICE
Interdisciplinary team practice is considered one
of the essential components of Community Oriented
Primary Care. Health care professionals working in
communities understand that they cannot provide comprehensive
care for all of their patients and meet the health
care needs of the community through an autonomous
practice model. This module is designed to assist
the student in gaining an increased understanding
and appreciation for interdisciplinary health care
team practice. Some historical background is offered,
models of Interdisciplinary Team Practice are described,
methods are given for interdisciplinary team building,
and references are provided.
At the end of this module, the student
should be able to:
- Define the concept of the interdisciplinary health
care team
- Identify 3 different models of interdisciplinary
team practice and describe the advantages and disadvantages
of each.
- Describe the preparation or professional training,
role, and scope of practice of the individual members
of an interdisciplinary health care team
- Analyze the interdisciplinary health care team
practice model in one of your clinical settings
and identify its strengths and weaknesses.
- Discuss strategies to improve team functioning.
