Pre-Test & Post-Test
Please take this test prior
to completing the Cultural Competence section
of the curriculum, and return to it once you have completed the session.
Some people are "color blind,"
meaning that race and culture make no
difference to them.
There is a clear difference in the likelihood
of a man receiving appropriate medical
care for cardiac disease between men of
darker or lighter skin color.
Your patient is a woman from El Salvador.
She has 4 children, and would like to
prevent future pregnancies, but her husband
does not want her to be using birth control.
If he finds that she is using birth control,
she states that he will kill both her
and the person who gave her the birth
control (you). Your preferred course of
action is to give her oral contraceptives
and report her husband to the authorities.
Your patient is a transgender, male to
female, someone who was born as a male,
but identifies as a female. She requests
female hormones for upcoming surgery.
Rather than giving the requested medication,
you refer her to a local organization
specializing in transgender issues
