Introduction to the AHEC and the Community
Activities

Activity #1
Service Learning:
  1. Visit the links to readings given below.

  2. Identify at least three characteristics of Service Learning and at least three goals of Service Learning.

  3. Begin a reflective journal. This will be used throughout your experience in the community. (See web reading #3 below under WEB READINGS for help writing a reflective journal)

Connect your service experience to the learning goals of the course and your University. The resources listed below under WEB READINGS can give you some ideas.

You might consider an analysis of some of the following:

  • Your preconceptions about poverty and wealth; who is wealthy, who is poor ?
  • How do we work in the community without reinforcing the perception of the "'superior classes' magnanimously rendering service to their 'inferiors'"?
  • How can I, as a student, design my own learning?
  • How is what I have been learning relevant to this setting?
  • What information did I need that I didn't have?
  • How can the community evaluate my work?
  • How can community members actively change their community and improve its health?
  • If you came back to this same site again, how would you feel?
  • Would you look at and solve problems differently?
  • Is there any advice you can offer someone else about to come to this site?
  • Have you changed any of your preconceived ideas?

Consider sharing parts of your journal.
